Double Fine releases Psychonauts app

The great game developer Double Fine has released an app for the App Store, and it's related to their very popular game Psychonauts (which recently arrived on the Mac App Store itself), but it's not, unfortunately, a port of the game. The Psychonauts Vault Viewer is instead sort of an ancillary add-on to the title, a compendium of all of the game's "memory vault" animations, along with new commentary from the game's creators Scott Campbell and Tim Schafer. It's interesting but if you've never played Psychonauts, you probably won't find a lot of enjoyment in the app itself. If you love the game, the app is like an extras DVD, with lots of game content and some other features.

Vault Viewer is a free universal app, available now on the App Store. We've seen quite a few game companies use Apple's platform in this way, creating ancillary apps to their main games, and making use of the mobile platforms as a sort of a "second screen" for players either while they're playing or for a game on another platform. I wouldn't be surprised to eventually see a full iOS game from Double Fine, but for now, this is what we've got.

Untappd releases iOS app, out now

As you may already know, I am a big fan of the hops, barley and yeast drink that's the world's oldest alcoholic beverage -- that's right, beer. And I've always been intrigued by the idea of Untappd, a social network built around sharing and discussing all of the various varieties and microbrews of beer out there. But of course no social network is complete without a mobile app that allows users to update while out and about, and that's exactly what Untappd's new iOS app does.

You can of course track and rate the various beers you're drinking and buying, and because it's all social, friends can see what you're tasting and share what they're tasting as well. Everything is of course geotagged (so you and a group can conquer the same bar's draughts, even if you're not there all together), and there are even badges to earn in the app itself. I'm sure a lot of badges were earned this weekend at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver.

I really like the look and feel of the app, and while we've seen this kind of thing tried before, Untappd seems to have another thing all strong social networks need: an actual network of people to follow. If you're also a fan of the pint and the brew, definitely check it out.

World of Goo is a popular physics puzzler from 2D Boy that lets you build towers with blobs of goo. Using loosely applied principles of physics, your goal is to move the goo through pipes and into new levels. The game has an enthusiastic following and is available on a variety of platforms including OS X and iOS.

2D Boy is celebrating its 5-year anniversary today and has slashed the prices on World of Goo. World of Goo for the Mac is available for US$1.99, down from $9.99 and World of Goo HD, a universal iOS app, is available for 99-cents, down from $4.99. There is also a non-HD version for the iPhone and iPod touch that is on sale for 99-cents, but as 2D Boy points out, you might as well buy the HD version since it is a universal app and includes both the iPhone and iPad version.

How the Kindle lost the keys to mimic the iPad

Blogger Nick Bilton at the New York Times Bit Blog noticed something fascinating about the new Amazon Kindle devices the other day, so he talked to a hardware designer who had worked on the original Kindle e-reader in 2007. Sure enough, the designer told him that the original device design was largely inspired by the BlackBerry. Bilton noticed that the new designs are all mimicking a device that is near and dear to the hearts of TUAW readers -- the iPad.

The 2007 Kindle looked a lot like a BlackBerry and worked in a similar manner. It had a clunky keyboard at the bottom of the e-Ink screen, a scroll wheel to move around the text and menus, and a very boxy look. BlackBerry smartphones from that era look remarkably similar, and the anonymous designer told Bilton that Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos' BlackBerry was the inspiration for the first Kindle.

The devices that were introduced this week owe much of their design to the iPad. There are no scroll wheels, no physical keyboards. Instead, the devices have moved to a design meme that features a screen surrounded by a bezel -- exactly the design of the iPad. Bilton quoted Tumblr UI designer Justin Ouellette as saying that the Kindle Fire even uses the same Gorilla Glass as the iPad, but that companies hoping to truly compete with the iPad need to mimic Apple in one more way: pay attention to details. As Ouellete notes, "The weight, the thinness, the feel, the texture of the glass, are all really important to the overall experience."
